Department of Mechanical Engineering was started with an Undergraduate programme in the year 1946 with an intake of 60 seats increased to 100 in 2003.
A Post Graduate programme was started in the year 1986 in the field of Machine Design for 18 students.
The department is recognized as a research centre by VTU.

Graduates would have the following abilities

·         Ability to analyze mechanical engineering problems, interpret data and arrive at meaningful conclusions involving mathematical inferences.

·         Ability to understand and solve complex mechanical engineering problems by conducting experimental investigations.

·         Ability to apply appropriate tools and techniques and understand utilization of resources appropriately to complex mechanical engineering activities.

·         Ability to understand the effect of mechanical engineering solutions on legal, cultural, social and public health and safety aspects.

·         Ability to develop sustainable solutions and understand their effect on society and environment
